For over 50 years, the Great American Basketball League (GABL) has been a trusted leader in youth basketball across the Kansas City metro. Now entering its 51st year, GABL continues to offer a well-organized, inclusive, and developmentally focused basketball experience for boys and girls from pre-K through 8th grade. As part of the GABL Youth Sports Foundation, a nonprofit 501(c)(3) community-based organization, our mission goes beyond the court, fostering growth, sportsmanship, and community engagement at every level.
One of GABL’s key strengths is its flexibility and accessibility. There are no geographic restrictions on team formation, and we offer leagues for all skill levels. Teams are grouped by competitive ability when registration numbers allow, making it easy to find the right fit whether you’re brand new to the sport or a seasoned player. Our GABL Academy enhances player development through a variety of programs, including KidHoops for pre-K, a 3-on-3 development league for K–2nd grade, seasonal camps, individual skills training, an Elite Team program, and coaches clinics, ensuring every participant has the opportunity to grow.
GABL is managed by Sports Management Associates (SMA), a professional organization that brings a high level of organization, consistency, and experience to the league. On the court, our games are officiated by knowledgeable and experienced referees—nearly 50% of our officials also work junior varsity or varsity high school games, bringing credibility and quality to each matchup. All coaches undergo background checks, and excess accident insurance is included for every participant to ensure peace of mind.
The Winter Program is GABL’s flagship season, running from November through late February. Teams play 10–13 games, depending on grade level, with practice time included for Shawnee Mission-based teams. Both individual and team registrations are welcome. For players in grades K–3, uniform jerseys are provided, and a minimum playing time rule ensures fair participation for all. Need-based scholarships are also available, reinforcing GABL’s commitment to access for all.
In addition to league play, GABL hosts tournaments throughout the year, including events that support charitable causes such as Hoops 4 Hope and the American Cancer Society. Awards are given across leagues and tournaments, and our partnership with Dick’s Sporting Goods provides teams with discounted uniform services, adding further value to the GABL experience.
Whether you're a first-time player, a returning team, or a parent looking for a supportive, professionally managed sports league, GABL is the place to play, learn, and grow.
