Great American Basketball League was founded in 1974 when Roger Siuda and L.D. "Mac" McDonald could not find a basketball league in which their 4th grade boys could play. By the winter season of 1977-78, 109 boys teams in grades 3-7 were competing in GABL during the winter. Today, more than 8,000 boys and girls in 1st grade through high school play in GABL leagues year-round.

Incorporated as a non-profit organization in January.

Contributions became tax-deductible, establishing GABL as a recognized charitable entity.
1995

Sports Management Associates, L.C. (SMA) was hired to manage day-to-day operations.

Rich Hunter, SMA President, was named Executive Director.
1997

GABL expanded beyond winter programming with the launch of Spring and Summer Leagues.
2000–01

GABL opened registration to all of Johnson County, beyond the Shawnee Mission School District.

Boys High School Program reinstated with the introduction of a 9th Grade League.

The 2nd Grade Boys Developmental 3-on-3 program was launched.
2001

Fall League was added to the seasonal offerings.
2002–03

3-on-3 program expanded to include 1st and 2nd grade boys and girls.

Girls 5-on-5 program launched for grades 2–4.

Boys 5-on-5 expanded to include 2nd grade players.
2003–04

Winter program participation surpassed 4,000 for the first time (435 teams).

KidHoops child development program was launched for ages 3–5, involving parents and instructors.
2004–05

3-on-3 developmental program opened to kindergartners, making the program available for K–2nd grade.
2009–10

The 501(c)(3) corporation was renamed the GABL Youth Sports Foundation.

The Great American Basketball League (GABL) remained the flagship program.

KidHoops and the 3-on-3 program were formally brought under the GABL Academy umbrella.
2010–11

5-on-5 leagues introduced for 1st grade boys and girls, further expanding early grade-level offerings.
