Mad Award

The “Making a Difference” Award

The "Making a Difference" Award is given to individuals who have made a positive difference in the lives of youth, served the community in a meaningful way, and promoted the values of athletic participation.


Recent Honorees

  • 2020 – Jeff Chalk
    Jeff Chalk is the current Executive Director of 3&2 baseball in Johnson County serving thousands of athletes year round  ranging  from 4 year olds to high school seniors.  Throughout his time at 3&2, Jeff has created programs,  built amazing facilities for our community and has invested in the youth of Kansas City to give them amazing baseball opportunities and life long lessons.
  • 2019 – Dave and Kelly Tines
    Dave and Kelly have served as a coach and team mom for football, baseball, lacrosse, and basketball, and have worked with Scouts programs. In 2012, they founded the West is Best Scholarship Fund to ensure every student in the SM West area could participate in after-school activities regardless of financial status. To date, 775 scholarships totaling over $72,000 have been awarded, along with outreach efforts providing sporting and Scout equipment, reduced-price physicals, and the Vikingpalooza Family Fun Fest.

  • 2018 – The Briley Family
    The Briley Family has supported youth sports organizations such as 3&2 Baseball, Midwest Sports, GABL, and numerous individual teams. Their broader philanthropic work has included support for Lakemary, Heads Up, American Cancer Society, Big Brothers/Big Sisters, No One Fights Alone, Kansas Explosion, and Bishop Miege Basketball Camps. The Briley Sonic Group Board of Directors includes Lyle, Leon, Bart, Steve, Bruce Briley, and Duane Beddo.

  • 2017 – Jeff Briley
    Jeff has served as National Board Chairman and KC Board President for the KU Alumni Association and has contributed to organizations like the Village Church Food Pantry, Overland Park Chamber of Commerce, and GABL. He directed the 3v3 development program and founded the successful KidHoops program for ages 3–5.

  • 2016 – Lane Green
    Lane has served as Athletic Director at SM East, Olathe North, and the Olathe School District. Currently, he is Director of Athletics and Activities and School Administration in the Blue Valley School District. He serves on several state and national athletic boards and has presented for the Champions of Character program since 2009.

2006 Warren McCamish Former GABL commissioner (1994–2000), led the transformation into a year-round program.
2007 Mark Jorgenson GABL board member and coach, active in Boy Scouts and Shawnee Mission Education Foundation.
2008 Larry Pfeiffer GABL board member for 16 years, former treasurer and commissioner.
2009 Rusty Newman Former coach and athletic director, known for winning state titles and serving SMSD administration.
2010 Fred Logan Longtime GABL coach, board member, and chair of multiple civic and youth sports organizations.
2011 Patti Phillips Executive Director of WIN for KC, national advocate for girls and women in sports.
2012 Jim Gurley Teacher, coach, and sponsor of youth sports teams; founded the Jim Gurley Memorial Fund.
2013 Michael Meadors Executive Director of Johnson County Parks & Recreation; oversaw major facility development.
2015 Bill Nicks Lenexa’s first Parks and Rec Director, GABL and CYO official, historical reenactor, and youth advocate.
